Our Mission

The SWANA Population Working Group serves as a collaborative space for scholars whose work engages with the Southwest Asia and North Africa region. We foster community and solidarity, provide a platform for sharing research, and offer support as members navigate their academic work and collaborations.

We are especially committed to creating a welcoming environment for early-career scholars to engage, learn, and grow alongside peers and mentors, strengthening our collective knowledge and connections.

Why SWANA?

We use the term Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) to promote inclusivity, emphasize decolonial perspectives, and move away from the orientalist framing traditionally applied to the region, more commonly referred to as the Middle East and North Africa.
